Mothers who are infected by HIV and are not receiving any treatment face up to a 40% chance of transmitting it to their babies if they breastfeed for two years or more. In developed countries, the general recommendation is that infected women use formula instead of breastfeeding. On the other hand, in developing nations, breastfeeding is favored as access to health services or clean water is lower.
