It is best to prevent meconium aspiration than to treat it. It is advisable to ensure child birth before the 42nd week of gestation. As treatments, the following can be done:

* Amnioinfusion: a procedure by which the amniotic fluid is diluted by a sterile fluid to reduce chances of the baby inhaling meconium
* Sucking meconium from the baby's vocal cords
* Put the baby on to a heart-lung machine
