Following are the causes of postpartum haemorrhaging:
* Overdistention of the uterus due to factors like multiple foetuses or foetal problems leads to Uterine Atony (failure of uterus muscle fibres to contract and retract) which is the major cause of postpartum haemorrhaging. Prolonged labor, drug inhinited contractions, low lying placenta etc. are other reasons that lead to Uterine Atony.
* Retention of portion of the placenta
* Damage to genital tract, uterine rupture, cervical lacerations, vaginal lacerations
