It is an inflammation of the urethra caused by infection by other germs than gonococci. The germs that may cause it are:

* Bacteria: Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Haemophilus vaginalis, and Mycoplasma genitalium.
* Virus: Herpes simplex virus (rare), adenovirus,
* Parasites: Trichomonas vaginalis (rare).

Non-infectious causes: mechanical injury (from a urinary catheter or cystoscope) through a chemical irritant (antiseptics or some spermicides).
