It is a cervical mucous secretion that plays an important role in the fertility of women. Its properties vary depending on the time of the menstrual cycle. For a few days after menstruation, cervical mucus so-called "sterile" thick and acidic pH blocks the orifice of the uterus neck and dont let the spermatozoa enter the cervical canal. Shortly before ovulation, cervical mucus becomes "fertile". Its texture is smoother and less acidic pH to let the sperm and allow them to live long enough. During pregnancy the cervical mucus forms a "mucus plug" thick blocks the cervical canal to protect the uterine environment against external infections.
